PEM Hydrogen Injection for Trucks

Heavy-duty trucks are the clearest case for hydrogen injection: large displacement, long periods at steady load, high annual fuel spend and fleet-scale measurement discipline. That combination gives both the physical conditions and the data quality required for a defensible result.

Technical explanation

A heavy-duty PEM unit is cabinet-mounted on the chassis rail or behind the cab, wired to the 24 V system through a fused, ignition-switched circuit, and plumbed into the intake with an 8 mm line and a non-return arrangement. Water capacity is sized so refill intervals align with routine service rather than daily checks.

Output is matched to displacement rather than to power rating: too little gas produces no measurable effect, and beyond a certain enrichment fraction the returns flatten while electrical load on the alternator keeps rising. Power draw is a real parasitic cost and must be included honestly in any net-efficiency calculation.

Combustion effects

On line-haul duty the engine spends most of its time in a narrow load band, which is exactly where enrichment behaves predictably. Drivers commonly report reduced visible smoke on hill pulls and under acceleration, consistent with the particulate reductions reported in bench work.

Fuel-consumption change is the metric fleets actually buy, and it is the most variable one. It should be established over matched routes and matched loads across several weeks, not from a single trip. Treat any single-vehicle result as indicative until it repeats across the fleet.

Application-specific notes

  • Prime movers and rigid heavy trucks: heavy-duty units sized above 7.0 L displacement
  • Fit in pairs where possible — one treated, one control — on identical routes
  • Log DPF regeneration intervals before and after; they are a useful secondary indicator
  • Hardware-only supply: installation is by the operator's own qualified technician
