PEM Hydrogen Injection for Diesel Engines
Diesel combustion is mixing-limited: fuel burns as fast as it can find oxygen inside a turbulent, heterogeneous spray plume. Hydrogen enters that process from a different direction — premixed with the intake air — which is why its effect on diesel is more structural than a simple energy contribution.
Technical explanation
A PEM unit delivers a continuous, low-flow H₂/O₂ stream downstream of the mass-airflow sensor and upstream of the turbocharger. Because the hydrogen is homogeneously distributed in the charge before injection begins, every diesel spray plume develops inside an atmosphere that is already easier to ignite.
Flow rates are deliberately small relative to air consumption, so volumetric displacement of air is negligible and boost, EGR and after-treatment behaviour are unchanged. The ECU sees ordinary intake conditions and continues to meter diesel normally; no remap is applied and the installation stays reversible.
Combustion effects
Hydrogen's low ignition energy and high diffusivity shorten ignition delay and accelerate premixed burn. Heat-release analysis in the published literature typically shows an earlier, sharper first peak and a shorter overall burn duration, which raises the effective expansion work extracted from each cycle.
Soot forms in fuel-rich pockets inside the plume; a faster, hotter, better-distributed early flame reduces the residence time of those pockets and consistently lowers smoke opacity and particulate mass at mid to high load. The counterpart is a NOₓ increase at some load points, the classic soot/NOₓ trade-off, which must be verified on the specific engine.
Application-specific notes
- Best evidence sits at mid to high steady load — line-haul, gensets, marine propulsion
- Extended idling and short urban stop-start cycles show the weakest returns
- Baseline engine condition matters: worn injectors or a fouled turbo will dominate any gain
- Measure with a fixed protocol — fuel-flow metering or full-tank method over matched routes

Questions.
Will hydrogen injection damage a DPF or SCR system?
- No. The gas is introduced upstream of combustion and does not add sulphur, ash or additives. Lower particulate output generally reduces DPF regeneration frequency rather than increasing it.
