PEM Hydrogen Injection for Marine Engines

Marine diesels run long hours at a fixed cruise setting, burn expensive fuel delivered to remote locations, and are serviced under conditions where caustic consumables are unwelcome. PEM hydrogen injection suits that profile better than any legacy alkaline arrangement.

Technical explanation

The unit is mounted in a dry, ventilated part of the engine space, away from direct spray and bilge water, and fed from the vessel's 12 V or 24 V system. Gas is introduced into the intake ahead of the turbocharger; the low flow rate means no change to airflow metering or governor behaviour.

Salt-laden air, vibration and continuous humidity make enclosure integrity and cable-gland discipline more important than on road vehicles. Water supply must be deionised — using ship's fresh water without treatment will shorten membrane life sharply, so the resin filter is a mandatory part of the installation, not an accessory.

Combustion effects

Propulsion engines at cruise sit in the load band where enrichment is most predictable, and the reduction in visible exhaust smoke is often the first thing crews notice. Auxiliary sets running hotel load at part load benefit for the same reason stationary gensets do: low-load combustion is the least complete.

Because marine duty cycles are long and stable, fuel logging over comparable passages gives unusually good data quality. Compare like-for-like: same route, same displacement, same sea state band, over multiple passages rather than one voyage.

Application-specific notes

  • Commercial fishing, workboats, ferries and charter vessels are the core use cases
  • Mount clear of bilge, spray and exhaust radiant heat; ventilate the gas line run
  • Auxiliary gensets can be treated independently of propulsion engines
  • Confirm class and survey implications with the vessel's surveyor before fitting
