Oxyhydrogen Injection for Diesel Engines
Diesel engines run lean and heterogeneous, which is why they are efficient and also why they smoke. Oxyhydrogen injection targets the heterogeneity: it puts a fast-igniting, oxygen-bearing species uniformly through the charge before the first drop of diesel enters the cylinder.
Technical explanation
The generator supplies a continuous low-flow stream into the intake tract. Unlike port fuel injection there is no metering per cycle — the enrichment level is set by generator output and engine airflow, so the effective fraction naturally falls as load and airflow rise, and rises at low airflow.
This self-scaling behaviour is convenient in practice: idle and light load, where combustion quality is worst, receive proportionally more enrichment. It also means the system cannot over-enrich at high load, which is what keeps the installation safe without electronic dosing control.
Combustion effects
Cycle-to-cycle variability in indicated mean effective pressure typically falls, because ignition is less dependent on the local condition of any single spray plume. That stability is what operators experience as smoother running and less hunting at low load.
Alongside stability, the literature reports reduced smoke opacity, lower CO and HC and modest brake-thermal-efficiency gains. NOₓ can rise where peak temperatures increase; in EGR-equipped engines the interaction is more complex and should be measured rather than predicted.
Application-specific notes
- Strong candidates: high-hour diesels with visible smoke and heavy part-load operation
- Poor candidates: engines with an underlying mechanical or injector fault
- Rectify baseline faults before trialling — enrichment does not repair worn hardware
- Record opacity before and after; it responds faster than fuel-consumption data
