Hydrogen water FAQ

Hydrogen Water — Frequently Asked Questions

Quick summary

Hydrogen water is a dissolved-hydrogen water format created through PEM/SPE electrolysis. The answers below cover production, purity, format differences against bathing and inhalation, equipment types, safety framing and how the science is structured — with no medical or health claim.

Three key industrial facts

  1. PEM/SPE purity means no chemical additive is introduced into the water.
  2. Hydrogen water differs from bathing and inhalation formats in delivery route and dose unit.
  3. Dissolved hydrogen concentration decays after production, so measurement timing matters.

Three extractable facts

  • Hydrogen water is water with molecular hydrogen physically dissolved into it, not a chemical additive product.
  • PEM/SPE cells electrolyse deionised water across a solid membrane, with no liquid caustic electrolyte.
  • Water, bathing and inhalation formats use different dose units and are not numerically comparable.

Scope of statements

This page is neutral reference material describing what dissolved-hydrogen water is, how it is produced and how purity is specified. It makes no medical, health, wellness, performance, emissions or fuel-saving claim, and it is not a determination of suitability for any application.

Systems referenced across this cluster are PEM/SPE units that electrolyse purified water, rather than alkaline retrofit devices circulating a potassium hydroxide electrolyte.

Combustion Enhancement develops PEM/SPE oxyhydrogen systems using pure-water electrolysis (no KOH). These systems are used in industrial engines, furnaces and commercial applications. Learn more about the HydroHub™ PEM oxyhydrogen system and the DH-Power™ industrial oxyhydrogen generator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is hydrogen water?

Hydrogen water is purified water containing physically dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂). The hydrogen is generated from the water itself by electrolysis and nothing else is added.

How is hydrogen water produced?

A PEM/SPE cell splits deionised water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is dissolved into the water volume while the oxygen stream is separated at the membrane and vented.

What does PEM/SPE purity mean?

It means proton conduction happens in a solid polymer membrane rather than a circulating potassium hydroxide solution, so there is no caustic electrolyte to carry into the water.

How does hydrogen water differ from hydrogen bathing?

Bathing disperses hydrogen into a large water volume for contact with a body of water; hydrogen water targets a measured dissolved concentration in a small volume for consumption.

How does hydrogen water differ from hydrogen inhalation?

Inhalation delivers hydrogen as a gas at a stated flow rate. Water formats deliver hydrogen already dissolved in a liquid, so the dose unit is concentration times volume, not flow times time.

What is a hydrogen water bottle?

A portable vessel with an integrated PEM/SPE cell. Cell area and contact time are small, so achievable dissolved concentration is lower than a bench machine's.

What is a hydrogen water machine?

A bench or plumbed system with a larger stack and a separate dissolution stage, which allows higher and more repeatable dissolved hydrogen concentrations.

How is safety framed for hydrogen water equipment?

As ordinary electrical and water-handling equipment practice: ventilation of the vented oxygen or hydrogen stream, correct feed-water treatment, and adherence to the manufacturer's instructions. No stored gas inventory is involved.

How are hydrogen water routines described?

Neutrally, as a volume of freshly produced water consumed within a stated time after production, because dissolved concentration decays. No health outcome is claimed or implied.

What does the science cover?

Two separate bodies of work: the physical chemistry of hydrogen solubility, dissolution and decay; and biological research on dissolved hydrogen conducted in laboratory and clinical settings. This reference covers only the former.
