Diesel Hydrogen Injection — Frequently Asked Questions

Quick summary

Diesel hydrogen injection introduces a small, on-demand hydrogen or oxyhydrogen flow into the intake air of a diesel engine while diesel remains the fuel. The questions below cover injection method, what changes in the combustion process, why gas quality matters, and how a defensible fleet evaluation is structured.

Three key industrial facts

  1. Gas is introduced into the intake air path; diesel injection, timing and engine management are unchanged.
  2. Dosing is expressed as gas flow relative to engine displacement and load, not as a fuel substitution percentage.
  3. A defensible fleet evaluation needs baseline data, matched duty cycles and telematics-grade measurement.

Three key industrial facts

  • Diesel remains the energy source; hydrogen is a small combustion participant.
  • Air-path introduction means no fuel-system or ECU modification.
  • Evaluation validity depends on baseline quality, not on trial duration alone.

PEM/SPE oxyhydrogen systems

Systems referenced across this cluster are PEM/SPE units that electrolyse purified water, rather than alkaline retrofit devices circulating a potassium hydroxide electrolyte.

Combustion Enhancement develops PEM/SPE oxyhydrogen systems using pure-water electrolysis (no KOH). These systems are used in industrial engines, furnaces and commercial applications. Learn more about the HydroHub™ PEM oxyhydrogen system and the DH-Power™ industrial oxyhydrogen generator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is diesel hydrogen injection?

It is the introduction of a small hydrogen or oxyhydrogen flow into a diesel engine's intake air while diesel remains the fuel. The gas is generated on demand by an electrolyser drawn from the vehicle or plant electrical supply.

How does it change combustion characteristics?

The added hydrogen raises mixture reactivity, which the literature associates with altered ignition delay and faster early flame development. Direction and magnitude depend on load, dosing and engine design.

What injection methods are used?

Practically all industrial implementations dose into the intake air stream, either upstream of the turbocharger inlet or into the charge-air path downstream of the intercooler, using a bubbler or flame-arrest fitting.

Does it modify the fuel system or ECU?

No. Fuel injection, injection timing and engine management remain as delivered by the manufacturer.

Why does PEM purity matter for fleets?

Fleet units run for thousands of hours. PEM cells electrolyse purified water with no liquid caustic electrolyte, avoiding electrolyte carry-over and corrosion issues repeatedly noted in alkaline retrofit studies.

How should a fleet evaluation be structured?

Establish a baseline over a representative period, keep routes, loads and drivers matched, use telematics-grade fuel and duty data, and run treatment and control vehicles in parallel where possible.

How long should a trial run?

Long enough to cover the full range of the fleet's duty cycle and to average out route, weather and load variability — typically several months of continuous data rather than a few tanks.

What safety measures apply?

Flame arrest and non-return protection on the delivery line, secure low-vibration mounting, correct electrical protection, ventilation in enclosed spaces, and documented leak testing.

What does the evidence base say?

Published results vary. Several controlled studies report measurable changes in combustion parameters, and others report no measurable benefit; differences in gas quality, dosing rate and instrumentation are the usual explanations.

Is the equipment supplied installed?

Supply is hardware-only. Installation is carried out by a competent technician following the installation guide and the operator's own safety procedures.
