PEM Oxyhydrogen Generator for Engines

An oxyhydrogen generator produces hydrogen and oxygen together, in the stoichiometric ratio water dissociates into. A PEM generator does this across a solid polymer membrane rather than in a liquid alkaline bath, which changes what the hardware needs, what it emits and how it ages.

Technical explanation

In an alkaline HHO cell, plates sit in a conductive potassium-hydroxide solution and the mixed gas leaves carrying electrolyte mist that must be scrubbed. In a PEM stack, the membrane itself carries the ionic current, so the feedstock is pure water and the product gas is hydrogen and oxygen with water vapour — no caustic carryover into the intake tract.

That distinction drives the practical differences: no electrolyte to mix or top up, no alkaline residue in the bubbler, lower maintenance exposure for technicians, and gas purity that does not degrade as the electrolyte ages. The offset is that PEM stacks demand deionised water and inline resin filtration, because dissolved ions foul the membrane far faster than they would foul a plate cell.

Combustion effects

Because the mixture arrives pre-blended with its own oxygen, the injected stream is locally rich in both a fast-burning fuel and its oxidiser. Ignition kernels form more readily and propagate faster, which shortens the ignition delay and raises the proportion of charge consumed during the early, high-pressure part of the cycle.

In practice this shows up as reduced smoke opacity, lower CO and HC, and a modest improvement in fuel consumption on suitable duty cycles. Reported fuel-consumption gains vary widely; our own stated expectation is capped at up to 15% under favourable conditions, and anything above that should be treated as unsupported.
