Hydrogen Water Production Basics

Quick summary

Hydrogen water production combines PEM/SPE electrolysis with a dissolution stage. The four things that determine output are cell capacity, contact time, feed-water quality and how the resulting concentration is measured.

Mechanism

Hydrogen enters solution physically, following ordinary gas solubility behaviour: more dissolves at higher partial pressure and lower temperature, and it leaves solution when the water is agitated or exposed to headspace.

Purity and feed water

Feed water is filtered and deionised before the cell. With no liquid alkali in a PEM/SPE cell, purity work concentrates on feed-water quality, residual moisture and wetted-material selection.

Equipment and reporting

Bottles integrate a small cell and reach lower concentrations; bench and plumbed systems separate treatment, electrolysis and dissolution and reach higher, more repeatable concentrations. Either way, an output figure is only useful with its measurement point and timing.
